Greek melodic death metal band, Nightrage, recently released their new full-length album The Venomous. Hailing from Thessaloniki, Greece, Nightrage was formed in 2000 by Marios Iliopoulos and Gus G. Both guitarists, the later retired from the band in 2006, after their first two releases, Mario was the only band member until 2015, when he met Ronnie Nyman, who joined as a vocalist. Since then, the group has met very positive reviews from critics.
From the beginning, this album was not at all what I expected from a melodic death metal band. Their sound is very much like Parkway Drive, from the first track, Nightrage is more metalcore sounding than some metalcore bands, with catchy breakdowns and chug driven riffs.
The album’s namesake track The Venomous gets to work with a very light death metal feel, but that doesn't mean the riffs are any less face-melting. The only point of criticism of The Venomous is that it is somewhat undivided between songs, and the high amount of repetition in string parts. Sometimes, riffs are used in multiple songs, with very little attempt at hiding. Some will like this quality, some will not. A track worth mentioning would be "Catharsis", seeming to show a bit more musicianship throughout the song than the others. It is catchy and sounds more thought out, due to it’s creative melodies. This album was released on the 31st of March, so check it out!
