NOUMENA - MYRRS

Finland natives Noumena are set to debut their album Myrrs on April 28th and it is undoubtedly worth the wait.  Myrrs is proof positive that phenomenal music has no borders and that music is a language in itself.

Myrrs is not just a metal album, it is a melodic metal dreamlike saga.  The guitars not only shred but also build up to big, beautiful harmonies that float into your ears like moths with razor blades for wings. The tasteful use of piano in tracks like “Syvalla vedessa”, in conjunction with the powerful and angelic voice of Suvi Uura, is like floating on a cloud. But don't get too comfortable, for it is not long before those beautiful dreams become harrowing nightmares with the raw grit of Antti Happanen's vicious growls and Tuukka Tuomela's hard hitting riffs that strike like lightning. Throughout Myrrs the sleek transition between guttural and harmonic clean vocals with riffs to match is just fantastic.

Myrrs is a well crafted melodic metal masterpiece, each track building the mood and evoking its own genuine emotional response; whether that be the urge to mosh with tracks like "Metsan viha" or being on the verge of tears with the heartfelt somberness of "Sanansaattaja".  Together, these nine tracks, build a world of their own, becoming more than just another metal album but a fully cerebral adventure that every music lover should partake.

DAWN OF ASHES - DAEMONOLATRY GNOSIS

Symphonic black metal band Dawn of Ashes will be releasing their 7th album Daemonolatry Gnosis on June 9th.

Dawn of Ashes has revolutionized the symphonic metal genre with this monstrous release; classical instruments ringing behind overwhelming guitar riffs, a choir singing over powerful drums. Tracks such as “Smash Thy Enemies” are orchestrated to be melodic and catchy, but still brutal enough to blare. Other tracks, such as “Guardians” will begin with a minor, horror movie-esque tone.

Daemonolatry Gnosis will leave you begging for more of the sheer brutality that is Dawn of Ashes.

A FLOURISHING SCOURGE - A FLOURISHING SCOURGE

A Flourishing Scourge is releasing their first full length, self-titled album courtesy of Begotten Records on June 9, 2017. The album was recorded in a little over a week - setting: Brooklyn, at Gojira’s Silver Cord Studio. The album was engineered and mixed by Jamie Uertz of Gojira and Anthrax - with additional mixing by lead vocalist himself, Tye Jones. An enormous amount of talent was pooled together to mold this album into something fierce.

For metal lovers, this album will not disappoint. “Tidal Waves” opens with immediate growling, crashing drums, and heavy riffs, and doesn’t quit for the entire 9:53 length of the track. “To The Stench of a Rotting Corpse” opens with a beautiful, slow melody that prepares you for a softer song - before completely demolishing that thought with booming vocals and equally aggressive riffs that will induce mosh-like behavior, or at the very least, some serious headbanging -  regardless of where you are. The bass in “Insatiable” is going to make you move - whether you want to or not, whether you’re conscious of doing it or not. “Vacant” starts off with another teasingly beautiful melody - slow and inviting - before the deep, rumbling vocals turn up. “Solace” is going to end your journey with a mix between hard and soft - the perfect combination of lulling melody and breakdowns.

A Flourishing Scourge is a band that will satisfy your inner metal rocker while giving you a taste of the sweet stuff - in their melodies, that is. This band displays how talented they are by demonstrating the command they have over their instruments and the smooth transitions between soothing melodies and in your face metal. On this album they have created a perfect combination between the two, marrying them together effortlessly, it seems. As the songs change, it is barely noticeable, as if each one was made to follow the former. Check out this album, it truly is a wild, wonderful ride.

Tracklist
  1. Tidal Waves
  2. To The Stench of a Rotting Corpse

  7. The Hedonist

HIDEOUS DIVINITY - ADVENIENS

I’ve had my ear on Rome, Italy’s Hideous Divinity ever since the extreme tech-death quintet put out Cobra Verde – their concept album based upon a little-known German film of the same name about a slave-trading king-killer in Brazil – in 2014, and ever since, I’ve been hoping and praying for more new material from this fantastically strident act.  And here in 2017, thank the gods, my wish has finally been fulfilled.
Hideous Divinity have returned with their third studio full-length, Adveniens, and when I say “returned”, I mean they are “back with a friggin’ vengeance”.  Due out on April 28th, 2017, Adveniens delivers extreme tech-death barbarity on a level rarely achieved.  Always loud and insanely aggressive, Hideous Divinity have brought the goods with this nine-track release that takes no prisoners and bars no holds.
Bursting out of the gates with the nearly seven-minute track, “Ages Die”, Hideous Divinity introduces themselves in their usual fashion:  With a swift kick in the teeth.  Fierce, intense, and seemingly interminable, “Ages Die” embodies all that I have come to love about this impossibly heavy five-piece.  And that’s just the first track!  Some of the other absolute killer cuts on Adveniens include “Sub Specie Aeternitatis”, which features some of the slamming-est riffage on the entire album; the seven-plus-minute rollercoaster ride that is “Passages”; the catchy and scathing “Feeding Off the Blind”; and the technically brilliant closer, “Embodiment of Chaos”.
To be honest, though, these are just some of my favorites.  In truth, this whole album kicks some serious tail, and I beseech you to check out Hideous Divinity’s Adveniens as soon as it hits the shelves of your local music purveyors on April 28th.  ‘Nuff said.  Enjoy.

LIV SIN - FOLLOW ME

LIV SIN, the newest project of former Sister Sin front woman, Liv "Sin" Jagrell, is set to release their debut album, Follow Me, on April 28th via Despotz Records. LIV SIN has a modernized metal sound; combining old school heavy metal, thrash, black metal, and mixing in modern elements in order to create something that is their very own. Mixing of old and new musical styles is becoming more popular with bands like In Flames and Pagan's Mind leading the charge; LIV SIN is set to successfully march in to battle right alongside them.

Follow Me is an excellent blend of harmonious yet haunting vocals and ferocious guitar riffs that would make Dio proud. Tracks like “Let Me Out” are as catchy as they are adrenaline pumping, boasting forceful riffs which build up to addictive outro shreddage and a booming chorus. Sultry tracks like the silk covered fist of “I’m Your Sin” and the seductive “The Beast Inside” will have metal heads new and old stabbing themselves in the heart and thanking metal mistress LIV SIN for the pleasure of doing so. If that weren’t enough she’s also included a killer ode to the legendary Rob Halford in her duet cover of “Immortal Sin” with 69 Eyes vocalist Stefan Kaufmann.

The unique mixture of more “American” style of clean hard rock vocals combined with the Swedish metal guitar shredding creates a monster sound; a sound so colossal that even those that followed Sister Sin's 13 year reign will find it new, refreshing and appealing. It doesn't take long to realize that LIV SIN isn't Sister Sin version 2.0; they are bigger, better, and Liv is bearing a brand new set of shiny fangs. LIV SIN is making a statement with Follow Me, one that is loud and clear, “I was metal, I am metal, and I am a force to be reckoned with".

REBEL BEAT - STEEL DUST

Rebel Beat, founded in 2013, is set to release their new album, Steel Dust, on May 5th courtesy of Pavement Entertainment.

True to the name, Rebel Beat delivers just that - mad beats - starting with the first song, I'm the Law. If you’re wanting more of a contemporary metal feel, the clashing drums and heavier riffs pick up in the second track, Swinging Around. The song won’t assail your ears with the typical metal growling, but you’ll still find the build-ups satisfying. Fiddler and Stan decide to show off their vocals in the song “One Man”, creating pretty harmonies over an upbeat tempo. “Steel Dust”, sharing the album’s name, will lead you through a range of vocals, take you down a straight, narrow road, and then lead you into “Melody”, which begins with deep drums and resounding riffs.

Rebel Beat displays their creativity and ability to cross over multiple genres on Steel Dust. They show off their technical talent, along with paying tribute to their own musical inspirations. You’ll be led through a journey of beats, resounding drums, abundant riffs, a spectrum of vocals, and even some rapping - if all of the above sound good to you, you’ll want to give Steel Dust a shot.

  1. I'm the Law
  2. Swinging Around

INSANITY - TOSS A COIN

Switzerland natives Insanity are bringing back 90's harcore (Hatebreed, Pennywise, Strung Out) in style with their sophomore full-length release Toss A Coin, available May 26th via Bastardized Recordings.

While Toss A Coin is most definitely a Throwback Thursday worthy album, it is by no means dated or stagnant, quite the contrary actually. Tracks such as "No Tolerance for Intolerance", "Toss A Coin", and "With My Friends" are great reminders of the days when punk was about social issues, and rebellion, but still having a good time with your boys (or girls). While you may not feel the urge to pop the cork on some fine Pinot Noir while listening to Toss A Coin, but what you will find yourself doing is chanting spirited anthems from the choruses of "All I Need", "Die For", and "What's Hardcore" with a pint in hand, side-by-side with your best pals.

Toss A Coin reminds us that hardcore can be harder than a cannonball without being depressive or dreary. It also reminds us that artists can have a stance on social issues without being whiny, soft-spine snowflakes and instead choose to spit in the face of adversity, like the old days. Toss A Coin is simple in it's construction; the riffs and beats are good but fairly straightforward, the lyrics and vocals are powerful but not grandiose but what the album lacks in "artistic depth" (said with a chuckle), it more than makes up for with guts, message, and delivery. Music doesn't need to be complicated, technical, or dare we say "fancy" to be good; sometimes less is more and Insanity got it right with Toss A Coin, this album is great reminder of why we love the metal scene so much, quite simply good music.

Tracklist
1. No Tolerance For Intolerance
2. Find A Way
3. Toss A Coin
4. What I See
5. With My Friends
6. Down
7. All I Need
8. One Day
9. $laves
10. What's Hardcore
11. Die For
